About the program

A full orchestra, and real repertoire.

The Junior Symphonic Ensemble offers exciting orchestral experience and concert repertoire to older (ages 10 to 18), more advanced students. The JSE is a full orchestra, complete with strings, winds, and percussion. Repertoire is selected from the standard orchestral repertoire, giving students their first exposure to great overtures, concertos, and symphonies, as well as shorter orchestral works.
Upon review, select members of the JSE are eligible to join the Young Symphonic Ensemble (YSE) in the annual Discovery Gala concert or on tour. The JSE is featured twice a year in the annual Winter and Spring Concerts.

Where JSE sits

A destination, not a waiting room.

JSE is a full orchestra playing standard repertoire: overtures, concertos, and symphonies. For many students this is where they do their best playing. A child who spends several years here, performing twice a season in front of a real audience, has had a complete musical education.
Occasionally a JSE player is asked to join the Young Symphonic Ensemble for the Discovery Gala or a tour. That is not a reward for time spent in JSE. It happens when faculty can already hear that a player is at YSE standard and simply has not auditioned yet. If that sounds like your child, the answer is to audition.
If your child wants to go further, the Young Symphonic Ensemble audition runs every semester, whenever they feel ready to handle its requirements. Those requirements are published, so you can read them together and decide when the time is right.

Not sure this is the right fit?

You don’t have to be. Every child auditions so faculty can hear where they are and how they learn, and they are placed where they will thrive. No child is turned away.
