Once a year, the teachers play.

Masterworks is the annual faculty recital. The musicians who spend every Saturday coaching children take the stage themselves, and the children get to hear what their own teachers can do.

A faculty recital, open to the community.

The Masterworks Concert Series, established a decade ago, is an annual faculty recital by the professionally trained music instructors of the Children’s Orchestra Society (COS). The faculty, which is devoted to developing young talent, hunger to express themselves through their art. The Masterworks Concert is an opportunity to showcase the COS faculty while bringing lively music to the community.

The 50th year

The concert that brought the alumni back.

Masterworks is the older tradition. It had been running as a faculty recital for years, with the faculty performing alone, before the alumni were ever part of it. Separately, COS had talked about forming an alumni orchestra for more than ten years without managing the continuity such a thing needs. In the 50th anniversary year the two were brought together, and the COS Alumni Orchestra launched inside Masterworks, sharing the program with the faculty.

I literally cried. I was overwhelmed, overcome by my own emotions. I could not believe that kids I had seen twenty years ago came back and played, and they were so good.

When and where Masterworks happens.

Masterworks runs once a year on a Sunday evening in early April, in Manhattan rather than at the Syosset teaching location. It is a ticketed concert and open to the public.

The 21st Annual Masterworks took place on April 12, 2026 and has passed. Nothing in the calendar covers the 22nd, so a reader who wants to attend the next one has nowhere to book. Add it to the events calendar under Concerts, expected early April 2027, and this page and the Concerts menu will both pick it up without any further editing. Also worth stating outright: the description says the series was established a decade ago, but the 21st Annual took place in April 2026, which makes it closer to twenty years. A founding year would settle it.
