A Saturday at COS

What the day actually looks like.

Every class at COS runs on Saturday, in one building, at the Community Church of Syosset. Children move between an ensemble, a chamber group, and a musicianship class depending on what they’re enrolled in. Most families are here for two or three hours.
The building mid-morning, instruments everywhere
The shape of the day

Three kinds of room, running at once.

The ensemble

Your child’s orchestra, from Pre-Kinder through the Young Symphonic Ensemble. The music is adapted to the players in the room, so a beginner and an advanced player rehearse the same piece together.

Chamber music

Small groups where there’s nowhere to hide and every part is somebody’s individual responsibility. Open to pianists and guitarists as well as orchestral players.

Musicianship

Theory, ear training, and sight reading, with conducting and score reading for the advanced students.
Every ensemble performs twice a year, a winter concert and a spring concert.
The timetable

Noon to half past seven, but nobody is here for all of it.

Classes run from 12:00pm to 7:30pm and your child attends only the ones they are enrolled in, which for most families is two or three hours somewhere inside that window. Musicianship and chamber groups finish earlier in the season than the ensembles do.

PARENT EXPERIENCE NEEDED
Needed from COS: whether parents wait in the building and where, whether rehearsals are open to watch, parking, and what families who travel a distance typically do between classes. The Traveling Families page has the same gap.

Come and see one.

An audition is the shortest route into the building.
